The Story of Wandrio

It all started on a bike ride with my friend Olli. As we pedaled through familiar roads, Olli began talking about a problem he couldn’t shake: people simply don’t move enough, and especially not in nature. We both knew how much exercise and fresh air meant to us—lower stress, less anxiety, more energy, and a deeper sense of happiness. But too often, modern life keeps people indoors and inactive.

As we rode, we began to brainstorm. What kind of solution could make it easier—and more fun—for people to get outside?

That’s when we looked at a trend already happening among cyclists: tile collecting. Cyclists around the world were pushing themselves to ride in new places, just to expand the colorful grids on their maps. We saw how this small mechanic turned exercise into a game and how it motivated people to explore further than they normally would.

And then it clicked: what if we could take this idea beyond cycling? What if the joy of collecting new geolocations could be accessible to everyone—not just hardcore athletes, but anyone who wanted to walk, run, or explore their surroundings?

We imagined an app that makes moving in the real world feel like playing a game. Just like Duolingo uses gamification to keep people learning languages every day, we wanted to use streaks, milestones, and missions to keep people moving every day. Instead of practicing vocabulary, you’d be collecting tiles, roads, points of interest, or even entire areas.

Imagine being proud not just of how far you’ve gone, but of where you’ve been.

“I’ve explored every national park in Finland.”

“I visited the three highest points in Helsinki in one day.”

“Together, our group discovered every hidden corner of our city.”

And because motivation is personal, we wanted Wandrio to include the social dimension too. Some people thrive on competition—racing to see who has visited the most locations. Others prefer collaboration—teaming up to complete collective missions and challenges. Either way, movement becomes more meaningful when it’s shared.

We don’t yet know the perfect business model, but we know this: Wandrio needs to exist. If we can help even a fraction of people move more, connect with nature, and feel better in their daily lives, then building this is worthwhile.

So we’re inviting you to join us. Help us shape the app that motivates people to visit one more place.
