Seasons-feature for tile hunting launched

We have released the Seasons feature for tile hunting.

We have now been developing Wandrio for about six months. Our goal is to make tile hunting a more accessible hobby and, through that, help grow the number of people participating in it.

A lot of work has gone into making sure that data coming from different sources is accurate enough so that all tiles appear correctly on the map. It now seems to work well for the most part. Data can be collected with Garmin, from Strava, or by recording directly within our application (iOS & Android).

Tile hunting seasons – compete in the Leaderboards

In our Seasons-feature, you can compete for points and leaderboard position on even terms, with everyone else.

The idea is that in the beginning of the season, everyone starts with an empty map. This way someone who has collected tiles for five days has the same possibilities on the leaderboard as someone who has been collecting tiles for five years.

Seasons – tile hunting point system

We are currently tweaking the points system, but right now it works like this:

How Points Work in Wandrio

In Wandrio, you earn points by exploring new areas, expanding your cluster, and staying active everyday. Below is a full list of point sources and how to get them.

Exploration points

Globally unvisited tile 512 points
Be the first player in the world to visit a tile.
This is the rarest and most valuable discovery.

New tile found 256 points
Visit a tile for the first time.
Your main way of earning points while exploring.

Tile revisit 2 points
Return to a tile you have already visited before.
Small reward to encourage movement, but exploration is far more valuable.

Clusters / Territory points

New biggest-cluster tile  192 points
Expand your largest connected tile cluster.
Rewards strategic expansion of your main area.

New cluster tile 128 points
Add a tile to any of your clusters.
Encourages building and connecting explored areas.

Megatile points

Megatile increase 128 points
Contribute to completing a larger “megatile” area.
Earned by filling tiles within the same larger grid.

Microtile points

New microtile found 4 points
Discover a new microtile within a tile.

Micro-megatile increase  4 points
Progress within a micro-level megatile.

New micro biggest-cluster tile  3 points
Expand your largest cluster at the microtile level.

New micro cluster tile   2 points
Add to any microtile cluster.

Bonus points for controlling a tile

Wanderer   1–32 points
Earn points when you are the last person to visit a tile. You will get points until someone else visits that tile.

Summary

  • Big rewards come from discovering new tiles and especially globally unvisited ones.
  • Strategic rewards come from expanding clusters and megatiles.
  • Small, consistent rewards come from microtiles and area control.

To maximize your score, focus on exploring new areas while keeping your tiles connected.

How to participate in the season-feature?

When you login to Wandrio, you will be asked if you want to join in the season-feature. The season feature has a leaderboard on season spesific tile map which will be only shown after you have collected 10 microtiles.

We take privacy very seriously and don’t share any of your data without your consent. That’s why you are not automatically added to a season. It is also the reason why your private activites in Strava or Garmin don’t count towards season points.

You can also join or unjoin the seasons from your Settings:

What are microtiles, clusters and megatile?

We have three different tile-sizes in Wandrio:

  • 1/1-tile (normal tile)
  • 1/16-tile (mini tile)
  • 1/64-tile (micro tile)

Normal tiles and micro tiles are the most used by our users, and thats why the season point-system is also built around them.

Cluster – Cluster is formed from tiles that are connected to each other. To be a part of a cluster, the tiles has to be visited by tiles connected to it from four sides.

Megatile – Megatile is a tile formed from connected tiles, that makes the biggest rectangular square.

Our seasons feature also offers us a way to gather feedback from users and test out new features on faster pace. So you might see some new challenges or quest pop-up during a season. Currently seasons last from friday to friday, but we will start making them longer.
